    DESIGNER´S COMMENT
Posted on Friday, February 24th, 2012 at 13:28.
    By judel/vrolijk & co

The owner of the Baltic65 “STIG” , Mr. Alessandro Rombelli, has ordered a new Mini Maxi Racer from Baltic Yachts which will be build in time for the 2012 sailing season. Judel/vrolijk & co has been commissioned to design this racing yacht. “STIG”/Baltic65 was a one-off cruising/racing yacht designed by judel/vrolijk & co that was built to the highest standards by Baltic Yachts and showed the potential of this design on the race course.

For next season Mr. Rombelli decided to go full on racing and once more chose our team to design his new boat. Our design team has a lot of experience in this size and with three World Champions in the mini Maxi Class under their belt they are the most successful design group in this Class. Mini Maxi’s like “Numbers”, “Luna Rossa”, “Container”, “Jethou” and “RAN” designed by judel/vrolijk & co have been winning races all around the world.

As a starting point for the design of this new yacht we used the design of “RAN” as a basic boat. “RAN” has shown that the design concept is very competitive in the Rolex Maxi Series and that she has the all-round speed potential to win in any conditions. The big challenge for us is of course to improve on this concept, especially as now there will be more new boats in this size racing in the Rolex Maxi series next year. The upper size limit for the Mini Maxi racers has been set at 72 foot overall length. This will make the series more competitive because the boats will be racing boat for boat and not only for IRC handicap as in previous years. The Mini Maxi Class will be like a Box Rule Class.

The area we have invested a lot of our resources to improve speed was to get more out of the restricted overall length of 72 foot. We redesigned the forward sections to get more volume and more speed out of the hull design. The aft sections have been refined and the chine is still visible but we have no more hollow sections aft because the IRC rule makers have handicapped this kind of development after we designed “RAN” and “Jethou” with this style of aft section. Further the aft overhang has also been treated differently by IRC after last year. The hull beam has been studied and optimised for the expected weather conditions the boat will sail in the next years. Appendage design and balance has been refined to better perform in the Mini Maxi fleet.

Concerning sailplan and sail area we are close to the “RAN” configuration with slight changes in area. We are working closely with the sail designer of the team to further optimise the shape and sailplan.

For the structural engineering for this project we will work with Steve Koopman, SDK engineering USA, as we have done with all our past TP52 and Mini Maxi projects. The structural engineering has to meet the ISO rules and will be approved by GL, Germanischer Lloyd. The construction of this racing yacht will be a real challenge for Baltic Yachts. Of course they have built several yachts in CF pre-preg composite, but this project is under pressure to be built as a 100% racing machine. The building time will be very short, only seven months as the plan is for the boat to be racing in the Copa del Rey series in July 2012.

We are convinced that the combination of a 100% professional approach and a very committed owner will make this Mini Maxi project a great success.
