Foton: Jean-Marie Liot.

J Boats Fight back with J/112E
During the last few European seasons, JPK in France have moved the game on in terms of performance vs. rating (albeit compromising somewhat on comfort below decks). Now, J Boats have launched a model which is not only ultra competitive, but also beautifully appointed.
Last weekend’s Spi Ouest was the debut regatta for the new J/112E, and all eyes were on her performance against the JPK 10.80. The latter had assembled a top level crew.
Anticipation over these two models going head to head was intensified by the fact that both were being raced by representatives from their respective shipyards. In a series cut short by the gales, the boats went very well.
In race one, the crew from J Boats suffered from rustiness with a poor start and poor tactics, finishing the race in sixth. Dismissing this as a warm up, the team then went on to win the next two races which were windward-leeward courses in 10-13kts.
The final race was a coastal course sailed in 25-30kts of wind. The J/112E was faster upwind but could not quite match the JPK on the fetching legs; the J finished second. Racing on similar ratings, the teams found that under pressure there was never a large gap between them.
With no discard they came second to the JPK, scoring 184.108.40.206. The works JPK helmed by Mr JPK scored 220.127.116.11.
After this first weekend, J Boats’ view is that the J/112E is faster upwind and downwind under spinnaker. They saw 18 knots as max speed and long periods of 14 knots.
