J/111 Polars & tuning guides
For some reason I get many requests for the J/111 polars…
It’s no secret that I think they are useful to get the most out of a boat. First as a a baseline for performance on a new boat and racing in handicap fleets. But also for routing purposes. And the J/111 have some pretty special characteristics where it’s important to find (and stick to) your sweet spots downwind.
Below are the generic one-design polars from the ORC VPP.
This is a good starting point. But you need to update them to match your own sail inventory and style of sailing. On the J/111 you need to get the planing speeds and angles right and if you carry a code sail, this will create a “bump” in the performance curve as well.

Here’s some tests with our code 0 (the small dots on the chart) and me trying to drag the curve to match the actual performance.
The only way to do it is to go out and sail, getting samples and updating your own polars. It isn’t rocket science and there’s several tools to help out. We use Expedition. It’s important to calibrate the instruments and be methodical in your approach. Take notes of your runs, either during races or 100% focused (eveyone hikes, helmsman & trimmers are concentrated etc) to be sure that you get quality data. Run each sail in 10 degrees intervals and in different conditions. It takes time, but after your first season you should have something really useful.
The additional bonus is that the whole crew is up to date with sail selection, sweet spots, cross overs etc that will lead to better performance.

Here’s the sail selection module in Expedition. All sails are mapped to TWA and TWS which allows Expedition to suggest the correct sail for the next leg.

Other ways to get a feel for performance is to analyze rating certificates. Above are the ORC ones that can be found on ORC Sailor Services.

World Yacht Racing forum to Gothenburg
Ännu ett riktigt stort event till västsverige. Den här gången är det World Yacht Racing Forum som landar på Hotel Post i december. Konferensen samlar de flesta som jobbar med Volvo, America’s Cup och andra stora professionella event inom vår sport. Parallellt går som vanligt Yacht Racing Design & Technology Symposium.
Informa Yacht Group, organisers of the annual World Yacht Racing Forum, today announced the city of Gothenburg as host city of the 2012 edition of the Forum. The two-day conference will take place at the Clarion Post Hotel from 11-12 December. The Forum will also include the Yacht Racing Design & Technology Symposium, which will run as a parallel event on the same dates.
The Fourm has previously been hosted in Monaco and, for the last two years, in Estoril Portugal. However, as 2012 Conference Producer James Gradwell explains, it has been important to move the Forum to a new location;
‘As a global sport and industry, we have always wanted to give other cities the opportunity to host the World Yacht Racing Forum as well as offering different venues for delegates. There is a strong interest in yacht racing in Northern Europe and Gothenburg is no stranger to hosting large-scale yachting events including the Volvo Ocean Race. It is a fantastic city and we look forward to being there in December.”
Now in its 5thyear, the popular World Yacht Racing Forum is the leading annual conference for the global yachting industry. The two-day event gathers the sport’s key personalities and industry experts to discuss the business of yacht racing and key issues such as sponsorship, television, media, Olympics, new markets, host cities and much more.
The move to Gothenburg has been coordinated with Host Partner and Gothenburg based events agency Brandspot with additional support from the City of Gothenburg and the Clarion Post Hotel. As Brandpsot Managing Director Jan Torstenson explains
“We are delighted for the City of Gothenburg to host the World Yacht Racing Forum in December. The Forum is a very respected event for the professional yachting industry and I know all delegates and sponsors will be impressed with the hospitality that Gothenburg can provide. The Post Hotel, which just opened in January this year, is the ideal venue in the center of the City”
