Instruments on a X-99?
OK, so a question from a reader. Instrumentation for 10 meter racer/cruiser boat would be an interesting project for many of us. And not so obvious in a changing world.
What type/brand/maker of instruments would you or any experienced sailor suggest as best for racing? I mean set of speed, depth and wind (and server)?
I do race on X-99 if it makes sense.
Or could it be a topic for your next post and possibly vote?
Thanks in advance for every answer.
Suggestions?

Hi,
On my X99 we had a set of Nexus instruments. 2mast displays and 2multi displays in the cockpit where the compass normaly are mounted on the x99. The system was abit older but it gave us all the information we needed. It was also pretty easy to change settings and calibrate the system. Maby not the answer you where looking for but atleast a start to the conversation. :)

Hi.
I have older Silva/Nexus and was happy about it. Server, Digital wind plus 3 Multi displays. But it started to show up Err3 time after time, and I have no clue about it… But it is not new definitely.
So that’s why I started to think about possible change.

FYI
err3 is ” no data in a period if time”

Usually “err 3” is caused by cables not being connected correctly or corroded, so you might try going through the system re-connecting all cables. Pretty easy to do.

Hello,
Nexus NX2 is really good value but Nexus is now sold under Garmin and I don’t know which differences that could have been made. Probably the instrumentation packages by Garmin are therefore also of good value. I would aim to spend some extra money and get a real range of instruments (equivalent to NX2 or NXR) which are connected to a single server which can send out NMEA to laptops, ipads.
Regarding multi instruments on the mast they are very useful for racing. I know garmin has launched a new set of Maxi displays which are not too expensive but seems really nice! Take a look on garmins website and see if you can find a proper range.

I think this is a very interesting question, and in fact I’ll bring it to METS and ask the different vendors to come up with a proposal.
The most important thing is to choose a system where you can get good service in your country. Things will break, and you need local help and spare parts to get it working again. So I would make this a priority. I think this was a key factor in Nexus success (not that obvious after they became Garmin).
In fact, the world was much easier a couple of years ago. Then both Nexus, Tacktick and NKE had packages for exactly this application. Raymarine was hard to calibrate, B&G to expensive and Garmin didn’t understand sailing. Here’s a proposal I did when I ran Happy Yachting:
Now the world has changed. Both the Nexus and Tacktick ranges are being merged into Garmin and Raymarine and look very promising in a few years. B&G have introduced Triton as an alternative for smaller boats, so they could be an alternative.
So, no easy answer. Sorry.
But I’ll bring this case to the different vendors and see what they come up with.

Great if you could ask the vendors. As you said it is not as clear to know what to get nowadays compared to 3 years ago.
Does anyone now if it is still the original Nexus guys who are developing for Garmin instead?

Same guys. So I’m confident that they have some cool stuff in the works.
But I really miss their excellent support. And it’s a hassle when the whole product range is migrating to Garmin. This season I’ve struggled with the speedo, the HPC compass (found ONE in stock in Sweden) and the wind transducer (new Garmin contacts require mast cable change – fortunately I didn’t have to change). Electronics are fragile – so good support is key.

What about inter-operability between brands these days? is NEMA 0183/2000 good enough or does proprietary protocols offer more function? what about physical connectors, any “standard” plugs or at least converters.
For instance I have heard several who are very satisfied with Raymarin EV1 autopilot, but I am not sure I would like to commit to Raymarine for everything else.

I find that it’s quite easy to integrate different brands of instrument and autopilot systems. We run Nexus NXR together with NKE autopilot, which works great, and many use the Raymarine pilots with other instrument systems.
Mixing and matching within the instrument system itself is a bigger issue.

NMEA0183 is still relevant and very simple. Where NMEA2000 is a bus system (cut the cable, and everything is down), NMEA0183 is one signal (or set of signals) per wire and as such more robust. The professional world still relies heavily on NMEA183, although NMEA could be seen as more convenient.

Hi,
This document might give you some ideas even if it´s based on discontinued products.

In fact, thank you all for your input and support. I hope it is interesting to more sailor, not just myself.
Under the link is the exact system I am using now. There is also Autopilot on board, but it is not connected into the net/server, so I do not think it has any influence here.

In any case (should I upgrade or not), any solutions or hints to improve or upgrade the system are welcome.
Per, thank you for the document, despite it is not in english, it is quite interesting and useful. BTW, what is your system on board?

Min erfarenhet av open source är att det krävs två saker;
