ORR vs ORC – big difference in VPP
We’ve been through many different rating rules with the J/111: SRS, NOR Rating, DH, IRC, ORCi, PHRF and now ORR (also I raced under AMS & PHS with J/111 Ginan). It’s always fun to compare and try to figure out the differences.
Especially when two rules are VPP-based.
Newport Bermuda Race will use “Performance Curve Scoring” which will make this even more interesting and dependant on how the ORR VPP treat our particular boat and sail configuration.
Upwind VMG in 6 knots; 3.48 knots (ORR) vs 3.79 knots (ORC). ORC thinks we’re much faster.
Reaching at TWA 110 in the same wind speed; 7.1 knots (ORR) vs 6.29 knots (ORC) which is almost 13% faster in ORR. Apparently ORR thinks a code 75 is more useful than ORC?
Also, the two rules disagree on the planing potential in 20 and 25 knots. ORC thinks the boat is almost 15% faster downwind in 24 knots.
Some of this difference might be attributed to the extra “offshore gear weight” in ORR, but 193 kg or 3.7% shouldn’t make such a big difference?

You must have a lot of data, so which VPP is more correct? For example in the VMG in 6knots. What are your performance, or is this a secret?

I would say that the ORC VPP is closer to our actual polars, developed over 10+ seasons.
