After evaluating many options, we’ve decided on our new ride. The next Blur is a J/99, formerly known as J Lance 14.
The photo is from Duo Cat-Amania, a double-handed race with six coastal legs on the French Atlantic coast. J Lance won with the series 1-1-5-2-4-3 in a highly competitive 56-boat fleet. She also did well in a few other races this season.
Many other options would leave us without a boat in 2025, but now we can get started this spring with a boat that’s already up to speed. The boat is optimized for IRC, has a full B&G H5000, and we just have to make some minor additions to get the boat to comply with Category 2 of the Offshore Special Regulations.
For a more serious double-handed campaign, we wanted something in this size, as this is where we see the best amateur racing. With races in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, we needed something versatile to work in lighter air as well as reaching in rough conditions. We think this is a good alternative. Some of the new, more powerful, IRC racers look fantastic, but we need to see what they can do on the race course.
We’ll try to do some racing in France this spring before sailing the boat to Sweden to get some offshore miles in. We’ll focus on getting up to speed, learning the boat, and doing some local races like Pantaenius Bohusracet and some of the shorthanded races in Norway. Also, some fully crewed races just for fun.
In 2026, the focus is on the RORC 600 nm Roschier Baltic Sea Race, Gotland Runt, and maybe Raymarine 2star — all double-handed.
Then probably Rolex Fastnet Race in 2027.
Stay tuned.
