Patrick Eden bor på Isle of Wight och har skjutit kappsegling på Solent professionellt sedan 1985. Hans devis är “If I can see it, hear it or smell it, I will photograph it..”
How did you start with sailing photography?
I have lived in Cowes on the Isle of Wight most of my life so the sea has been a constant subject for my Photography.
Which picture are you most satisfied with?
At the moment? I think the picture of Skandia Wildthing at Cowes Week is my current favourite.
Skandia Wild Thing. Cowes Week 2005
Best regatta to shoot?
Cowes Week. The Admirals Cup was great fun, but sadly it is no more.
Worst regatta to shoot?
Ones without any wind :-)
Rexona Men Round the Island Race 2001
Ellen MacArthur 2005
Who inspires you (other photographers)?
Conflict photojournalists, Don McCullin, Larry Burrows and Sebastiao Salgado. Any one can take a good picture, but not when someone is shooting at you! The sailing photographer who impresses me most is Franco Pace.
What gear do you usually use/favor?
I use Canon Eos 1D Mark IIs with 16-35, 70-200 and 300 2.8L IS plus 1.4x and 2x converters. I am looking closely at the Mark III at the moment.
Laser 4000
Any advise for those who want to become a better sailing photograph?
Personally the three most important things in photography are composition, composition and composition. The best way to learn is to look and keep looking at the great painters, they are the masters of light and composition. Shoot lots and lots of pictures, practice makes perfect!
How do you see sailing photography develop in the future?
Digital allows us to try pretty much anything now, I think the sky’s the limit.
