Kelt Cognac Yacht Designs 8
Time for something slightly different in our Kelt Cognac Yacht Design Challenge.
Design #8 | The Nightboat
It has been internally called the night boat (as opposed to a day boat) by the designers primarily because it was an after hours project. This ambitiously styled yacht endeavors to be more than a sport boat, plus teak and two couches.
The core concept is the designers feeling that sailing yacht shapes are often most beautiful below the waterline. We have spent a disproportionate amount of time ensuring that faired surfaces from hull centerline to deck centerline form a single appealing body, and that the heeled and upright sailing characteristics are predicable, safe and fast. Indeed, the underwater body is quite similar to that of a performance keelboat somewhat shorter in length overall. The higher freeboard creates a more enclosed cockpit with real back support while seated instead of a low railing. This arrangement makes lifelines completely unnecessary. In summary, you are seeing classic yacht styling, simply inverted.
The cockpit is opened up by the use of a whipstaff tiller, and sailing functions are largely handled by hydraulic rams. Two (powered) winches remain for all eventualities. Construction is carbon fibre, foam, and epoxy, obviously female moulded.
Below the water, there is a canting-lifting keel with very innovative composite motion, extending outward as it cants. This maximizes the sail carrying power for a specific draft, while reducing weight. A pair of asymmetric dagger boards provide the side force, and our deployed via push button automated hydraulics.
You can see that we have a novel plan for extending the possibilities when at anchor, or tied up. The aft deck has a wet bar and gorgeous teak deck for sunning, but also offers an area of shade beneath the raised panel.
The interior ahead of the mast consists of a double berth and a spacious enclosed head with a shower. The galley is located in the open aft deck.

Nice! Maybe not what I would personally refer to as “Sweet”, but definitely “Sleek”. I can’t see that I would ever consider buing one, but I like the idean. It looks odd, but stunningly beatiful!
