Såg farligt ut och riktigt dumt gjort, men förmodligen var Melgesgubbarna inne i “tävlingsbubblan” och tyckte sig ha koll på läget.. Vill ju inte förlora en placering genom en onödig gipp, det är ju tävling !?

Fult och helkorkat. Såg M32 på Garda för 3 år sedan.. såg sjukt nice ut när de kom dånande mot land med blåsan uppe.

Jag brukar inte vara mycket för avstängningar och dylikt men detta tar priset! När man som kappseglare seglar med berått mod rätt in i ett annat tävlande fällt på detta vis är huvudlöst, att man dess utom gör det vid kryssmärket på en stor Opti regatta är helt livsfarligt! Det händer ju ibland att någon förvirrad turist kan komma in i fältet av misstag men när fyra tillsynes tävlande M32 gör det borde leda till någon form av bestraffning, kan inte vara så svårt att identifiera vilka det var efter att man studerat filmen.

Är det kappsegling eller är det lördag?
Lika mycket arrangörsmiss som låter två banor kollidera på det viset men jag skulle nog fundera både en och fyra gånger innan jag gav mig in i ett Optifält på det viset…

Om man orkar läsa hela tråden på Sailing Anarchy i ämnet så finns det folk som var där som uttalar sig och säger att
– det var (en viktig) kappsegling för M32
– Opti seglade för-VM
– banorna var dragna mot respektive bergsida på ömse sidor om sjön för att undvika överlapp
– M32orna var ute i hörnet/på layline när de gippade
– en av dem vann regattan
Man kan även notera att det är på väg att utvecklas “Näthat” där, det talas om att sänka båtar, spamma facebooksidor, maila arbetsgivare och sponsorer till de två M32-rorsmännen.

Efter läst igenom hela tråden på SA (puh, den växer hela tiden) och som vanligt filtrerat ut en hel del trollande etc. är min sammanfattning följande:
Videon säger inte allt, men sammantaget med flera bra bilder är det skrämmande tydligt både hur vårdslöst och regelvidrigt man seglar. Diskussionen (den relevanta) fokuserar på sjömanskap, sportmanship (ursäkta svengelskan) och toppseglare som förebilder. För mig handlare det framförallt om hänsyn och sunt förnuft.
För att göra en liknelse; Ingen rätt ihopskruvad skulle få för sig att köra bil med full fart vid ett övergångsställe utanför en skola då “man såg en lucka” mellan två barn… (Blev lite tight, ungen började gå fortare…) Bara för att ingen blev skadad är det inte ok. Riskera andras (barns) liv/hälsa för man tävlar… Nu var det en båt på 2 ton som plöjde fram i nästan 40 km/tim bland barnen. Snacka om hänsynslöst.
En annan båt som också plöjde genom fältet kommenterar på sin hemsida och gör inte saken bättre:
To DancingBear’s point: US128 didn’t look so innocent. Their website http://argo32.com/spanish-bombs/ blaming of the PRO seems a complete lack of ownership for their own behaviour:
“The most exciting part of the day today though was again having to sail through the optis and seeing those kids faces. At one point I think we almost took out a few of the little tykes when we had to sail past their gybe mark. It was ultra sketchy and although I am sure they dug it, their parents were probably pissed. I mean we are a 32 foot boat sailing at 19 knots through their course. Dangerous indeed, but its not our fault that the PRO’s set up the courses so close to each other and started at basically the same times which all but guaranteed some conflict. The part of sailing here is that there is usually a lot going on, kiters, windsurfers, 49’ers, etc. It’s just part of the deal.”

My name is Filippo Pacinotti and I am the owner of the Melges 32 Brontolo.
Brontolo is racing the Melges 32 European Circuit since 5 years now.
During the 4th leg of the 2013 Circuit in Torbole – Lake Garda – Italy for reasons that I will try to explain in details at the end of this statement my boat during racing sailed through the Optimist Fleet that was competing for their Pre Worlds organized by the Yacht Club of Riva del Garda (Fraglia Vela Riva).
It happened 2 times upwind and 2 times downwind in 2 different days.
Brontolo was not the only Melges 32 sailing there, it happened to multiple boats of the fleet.
I thought a lot about how to start this kind of press release and the I decided to go straight forward:
I have to express my most sincere apologies to 4 groups of people:
• The Kids – especially those who have potentially been scared by our behavior.
• Their Families for the same reason above
• The Coaches that have undirect responsibility on the water for their athletes
• The Optimist International Class that, I imagine, was putted under heavy pressure for what happened.
Let me have even some words for my crew, including the afterguard, that has no responsibility either if some exists.
I could have easily gybed away being the helm in my hands.
Again, on my opinion, there are reasons why this has happened, the helmsman is not looking for excuses but some additional infos should been analized.
Hopefully what above is clear enough.
Now why this has happened?
• North Lake Garda is a very particular place where to sail, crowded and superbusy on the water during summer time (hundreds of dinghies, kitesurf, windsurf etc). It is a place like many knows which obliges you to sail on the extreme border of the racing area (left or right it depends).
• The racing areas for the Optis and the Melges 32 were overlapping. Both racing committees were, on my opinion, not reacting to this fact in the way they could (moving one of the field away from the other even after many complaints).
• Communication between the Yacht Clubs and the racing committes was simply not working.
• Moroever, with the exception of the last day, the starting time for the 2 fleets was basically the same.
• Conflicts were basically guaranteed.
• As a results the “encounters” with the Opti Fleet were usual, I would not say safe but usual.
• While racing we thought was an option to go extreme left and to cross the Opti Fleet we maneuvered to find our hole, depowering the boat letting the kite fly for a while and then proceed until the finish line as well documented in the video posted.
• We thought was safe enough. We did not hit anybody, nobody was even close to be injured, we had no discussion with our racing committee that clearly saw us and many other right there.
• The Melges 32 Brontolo did not infringe any rule letting, on our opinion, enough water for everybody to sail.
To make what has become a long story short this has been a bad day for me, for sure this it is not going to happen again to my boat and I feel sorry for what happened.
At the same time let’s try all to stay objective and understand well that there were too many coincidences not created by the competitors.

Come on! Just realise you made a bad decision, a really bad decision. And the responsibility is a 100% yours. Not the race course, not the weather, not the racing committee. I think that is maybe the most crucial and basic thing you might have forgotten… The Melges 32 weighs around 2000 kilos and would easily have crushed and killed the opti sailors if anyone had made a wrong turn, was fought in August or similarly. Thank god they are better sailors than you seem to be and managed to stay away from collision. The following statement shows pretty obviously it wasn’t safe at all:
“I was there! It was one of the scariest things in my life. we came to the spreader mark and bore away for the downwind. I went wide for some clear air and saw 3 or 4 melges coming downwind. Managed to dodge them all but i know some people who didn’t. My teammate ripped a melges kite as the melges bore away on to them and broached breaking their burgee while the other one got a scratch on their boat. Luckily this was the last day of the melges regatta so they won’t be here for the worlds itself!”

If he is serious about this he would have withdrawn from the race (still hasn’t happened).
“I trusted someone” (famous sprinter) another bad “explanation” which just isn’t enough…

Hans ! Om du bemödar dig att läsa den Italienske rorsmannens förklaring så finner du både att han är ångerfull, ber alla inblandade om ursäkt samt försöker förklara varför det blev fel, nu väntar han bara på Blurläsarnas domslut ?

En ursäkt är lite väl billigt och man anser fortfarande att man inte brutit någon regel. För att citera en känd seglarprofil; “-Aldrig har man hört så många argument från en babordsbåt…;-)”.
Skall vi leka domare här på Blur (samt flera andra bloggar) och hänga ut enskilda, utan alla fakta. Nej, givetvis inte. Däremot är det sunt med en diskussion kring hur vi ser på vikten av att segla enligt reglerna, visa hänsyn och sportmanship. Är det inte bra att det sätts fokus på sjysst segling?

Patrik A. Poängen är just att det räcker inte med en halv ursäkt. Om dina barn nästan blir överkörda av en bil (ca 2ton) på ett övergångsställe (=sb) av någon som kör i 40 km/timmen på blankis (=genacker, på gränsen till broach, kan inte bromsa) tycker du då det är Ok? Ingen blev ju skadad…
Sen har vi det sportsliga. Att ta sitt straff självmant, är det bara för amatörer? Vi ser det på kappseglingsbanor här hemma också när rutinerade seglare (och andra) trycker sig fram/väjer inte och verkar räkna med att ingen skall orka driva en protestförhandling, vilket få orkar/vill.
Klart man blir upprörd.

Jag kan tycka att om vederbörande är riktigt ångerfull och dessutom vägverket lagt övergångsstället precis bakom ett backkrön på en 90väg så är inte allt bara svart och vitt. Sen kan man undra när läsarna på Blur.se blev domstol i regelmål på Gardasjön.
Jag kan inte läsa någonstans att ni tycker tävlingsledningarna är en samling odugliga nollor som inte kunde förutse denna situation? Vilken Motor, Häst, Friidrotts eller Skidtävlingsledning skulle lägga en bana där de olika grenarna krockar?

Patrik A. Jag kan hålla med om att det är lätt att vara läktarproffs och att dra förhastade slutsatser av en enskild bild eller film. Lite nätmobbning och vi har en lynch-mobb, inte ok. Men…
Då det i det här fallet finns både video samt bilder från flera vinklar som tydligt visar att det var nära, bröt mot sb/bb, skedde med dålig kontroll (dålig sikt bakom storblåsan, nära broach) rätt genom ett fält av barn, som man måste räkna med inte alltid agerar rationellt, mm…

We realize your PRO could have re-set, abandoned, or finished when he saw the M32 fleet going through the Optis upwind. We even understand the power struggle, dick-swinging machismo, and terrible communication level between the Circolo Vela Torbole (M32 Host) and the Fraglia Vela Riva (Opti hosts).
And you know what? None of that fucking matters.
Video, photo, and eyewitness reports all prove that the Melgi forced Optis to alter course all over the place. At least one Opti had his burgee snapped off by your kites. A couple more knots of breeze or a tiny bit more bad luck and it could have been a very, very bad day for sailing in Italy and the world. Yet there were no exoneration turns, no apologies, not even an acknowledgment of what happened anywhere.”
