– Planing downwind
– Mostly amateur crew
– Prio 1: winning ÅF Offshore Race
– Prio 2: doing Ok in ORCi championships
Suggestions?
Veckans läsarfråga: vilken av de här skall jag välja och varför? Kul segling, allround både i skärgården och på havet. Visst fokus på undanvind. Shorthanded cruising/långdistans och även kappsegling shorthanded på till exempel Gotland Runt. Bra komfort på havet. Och rimlig budget.

Well …..you probably need a few…and the best amateur crew money can buy but what are the serious options to fit the requirements (Winning ÅF in a boat that planes)?
If we look at smaller boats a GP42 or one of original Ker 40’s might fit the bill but there are precious few of these around, especially with the “Fast 40” class taking off in the UK. The Ker 46 Tonnere seems to be on the market still but is an unknown under ORCi (and SRS ;-) ) A new Ker 40+ is another option but new is maybe not the economical option.
It’s fun spending other peoples money but the final choice will be made on a budget that we do not know anything about :-)

I would be a bit careful with the “Fast 40” boats. They seems to work for windier UK conditions, but might struggle in the light Scandinavian summer. HH42 is one example that seems tweaky in the light stuff. Also ORC-rating could be an issue or require some work.

Köp rätt båt, ställ upp med en otränad besättning och vinn stortävlingar. Är det så enkelt? Man vinner inte med bra grejor men man kan förlora utan dem. Vill man prestera hänger det på hur väl man förbereder hela projektet. Många tävlingar har förlorats redan innan startskottet. Utöver ny båt, nya segel och polerad botten måste man träna (mycket), förbereda och planera seglingarna, skapa rätt inställning (ambitionsnivå), förbättra mental och fysisk uthållighet. Var beredd att lägga mycket tid annars går det inte.

Obvious answer is, as mentioned above, TP52. You may also look at Cookson 50.
With Wolfpack you can reach both prio 1 and 2.

Not as sporty as a TP or a Cookson, but will become a class and I hear the Swan parties are pretty good.

OK, I had no information about the crew. Was Jesper on as well? How much did they practice and tune the boat? At least they were clearly faster than any Farr 40, which was not the case in Helsinki Worlds 2012.
They had some top placings and some quite bad races.

Vinna ÅF borde den lättare kunna göra än många breda slädar som kräver massor av vind.

Ingen aning om vad den skulle få för mätetal. Men då det enligt expertisen ska vara den regel som är mest rättvis och exakt, grundat på VPP, så varför skulle det inte funka med en långsmal, lätt båt. Skulle det vara ogynnsamt?

Hittils finns väl ingen som uppfyller ALLT? Hur lätt är det att hitta 10-15 amatörer som kan prestera och vinna med en TP52 eller en CS52?
Hur många av de båtar som nämts planar? Menar då på platt vatten och inte i en surf. ÅF är som banan är nu ofta mycket kryss i lättvind, vilka båtar är bra på det?
Skulle själv kunna tänka mig en ultralätt båt som Spirit46 med sänkköl, absolut!

Grand Soleil 42R . Not planing boat, but should be manageble by amateur crew. Similar to X-41 which won ORC Europeans this year.

MAT 1180 with a bit more upwind area will be the one if you really want to kill the Ladykiller. It works surprisingly well in ORCi as well.

That’s just speculations for now?
I can’t even find a rating certificate for one.
Boat #2, Quest, did well under Hamilton Island Race Week (IRC) and we’ve seen Mark Mills designed Landmark 43 doing well in ORC. But the MAT 1180 is still unproven – and a risky/bold move. Especially compared to CS42 and X-41 that work extremely well without much work.
Maybe we should learn something from the Next 37 hype :-)

No, analysis are done by Cossutti.
Not proven but from what is known from earlier performance and how the rating will be it will do well also in WW/LW races.
Next 37 is doing well now with a proper rigging. Mistake was the CDL assumption and time required to learn the new boat.

Next 37 came mid fleet at the Europeans (13th of 27 boats) after more than a year on the water. Not “doing well” in my book considering it’s only purpose was to do well in ORCi championships.
My point is that it’s not that easy to engage Cosuitti, Ker, Mills or J/V to design a winning “race”-design. J/V 42 Elena Nova and Next 37 are two examples of money and effort being wasted to find the “holy grail”in ORCi.

It is easier in IRC if it is a strong wind region. ;-)
The key in ORCi is an allround boat that do well from 6kt to 24kt of wind specially if you have a whole week of racing.

Swan har ett ganska ok track record med CS42, Swan 45 och Swan 60 som alla blivit bra allround och klarat sig hyfsat både som klasser och under olika handikapp. Att Nautor backar upp betyder ju en del.
Köper man en design och bygger en one-off så är det ju lite mer avgörande att man faktiskt levererar resultat.
CS50 föll på priset i just det här caset. Framförallt i relation till TP52 Wolfpack eller Cookson 50 Camilla.

Perfect for the RORC series. Teasing Machine was 3rd in our class and really took off when the wind was up. Not sure it’s the boat I would choose for lighter Scandinavian summer conditions.

Ville bara nämna att den finns, då den stämmer väl in på önskemåls specen, och är ganska okänd här hemma. Den som seglas nu (Teasing M) är ju så klart IRC optimerad, vill man optimera på annat sätt så går det bra förstås.

Säger som Stefan Winberg för 10 år sedan, köp en tp52 ;)
Känns som antingen en pigg 40 oftare typ X-41, First 40, Sinergia 40, sproilans skräddarsydd segelgarderob och väldigt mycket träningstid på vattnet, fast manövrar är förmodligen lika det besättningen kan så det är bara att vässa pennan. Om du vill plana köp en farr 30 eller melges 24 vid sidan av att segla entyp med.
Eller en tp52 och besättningen måste först lära sig hantera den innan de kan börja puttsa, så ännu mer träningstid på vattnet.
