- Vice hamnkapten i Sandhamn

Figaro Bénéteau Class One-design renewal – call for proposals
Within the framework of the renewal of its one-design sailing yacht, the Steering Committee, set up for this purpose, has launched a call for proposals, under the patronage of the Figaro Bénéteau Class and Beneteau Group, with a view to selecting a Naval Architect’s Office with the expertise needed to conduct a study of this design, from the pre-project phase to the plans and documents needed for the production and industrialisation of this new one-design yacht.
This new one-design will enjoy a programme of chiefly single-handed and double handed offshore sailing races. It will be equipped with technology delivering strong performance and be safe and simple to access. It will comply with category A of ISO standards and ISAF category 1 requirements. Its size will be between 30 and 32 feet, so that it will be cost-effective and affordable. The one-design concept will be strict and an integral part of the design and construction

From 16 – 19 February, 12 teams are participating at the 2016 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in Australia. The first two days of racing at the 19th edition of this legendary championship were dramatic in their contrast. While punishing wind and sea conditions marked the first day, the second day was notable for its backdrop of Sydney’s iconic skyline. Acrion was compelling on both days. Discover more.
FarEast 28R -10,0%
Flying Tiger 10 -9,9%
Farr 30 -8,6%
J/111 OD -8,4%
Thompson 920 -7,3%
Thompson 980 -7,0%
Farr 280 -7,0%
J/111 Blur -6,9%
C&C 30 -4,7%
Melges 32 -4,6%
Soto 30 -4,2%
FarEast 31R -4,0%
Mcconaghy Mc31 REFERENS
The briefing to Reichel/Pugh was to develop a flat-out racer designed around the IRC and ORC rules. Built in vinylester with a Gurit core, a carbon rig and carbon boom and rod rigging.
The X-Treme 32 will be delivered with a 12hp inboard diesel engine and will comply with the CE category A regulations.
The target price of the X-Treme 32 is estimated at EUR 128.500,00 ex VAT, sails and electronics.
The keel will be very easy to take off making delivery all around the world by open top container easy.
Some design comments:
Sprit – our thought was a fixed spit tube with tack point of a MH0 at the bobstay point and a retractable sprit extension for A-sails.
Companionway – We have modeled a small blister in the deck as I think it looks nicer and makes it easier to get the jib lead controls underdeck. Hatch is a simple hinged lid. Halyard led underdeck.
Main trimmer – controls would be led to box on cockpit centerline just forward of tiller.
Backstay winches – angled inboard to allow crew to wind with feet outboard hiking

North Sails flying high
The Volvo Ocean Race has appointed North Sails to be the exclusive Official Supplier of sails to the Volvo Ocean 65 one-design fleet in 2017-18.
– Race appoints world’s largest sailmaker as Official Supplier
– Read heralds deal for next edition in 2017-18
– ‘Sails improving all the time’, says Boatyard chiefALICANTE, Spain, February 16 – The Volvo Ocean Race has appointed North Sails to be the exclusive Official Supplier of sails to the Volvo Ocean 65 one-design fleet in 2017-18.
North Sails supplied the sail wardrobe for the last Volvo Ocean Race, which saw the first ever one-design Volvo Ocean 65 fleet finish in June 2015.
The durability of the Volvo Ocean 65 has already become a byword in the industry for its reliability and North Sails 3DiTM product has become synonymous with durability as well, powering six teams over 40,000 nautical miles in the last race with a ground-breaking, limited sail wardrobe.
Nick Bice, who heads up The Boatyard maintenance centre at the Volvo Ocean Race, explained that the success of North Sails in renewing their partnership with offshore sailing’s leading event was no foregone conclusion.
“North Sails was chosen against a lot of different criteria and not necessarily because of a long history in ocean racing and the Volvo Ocean Race,” he said.
“Many elements have contributed to the final decision, including the simple fact that the North Sails 3DiTM product is very good. The company has a strong commitment to the next edition of the race, not only from a product but also a personnel point of view.”
North Sails President, Ken Read, added: “The Volvo Ocean Race has been and remains a big part of my life having participated in three editions. North Sails also has deep roots in this race, powering eight of nine race winners since Steinlager 2 in 1989.
“Performance and durability are a prerequisite for every part and piece of the new one-design boats. Proven as the highest performing and most durable sails ever made, North Sails’ patented 3Di product fits the bill perfectly.”
The next step is to finalize designs for the Volvo Ocean 65 sail wardrobe, which will be carried out once the 2017-18 route is confirmed by mid-2016. After that comes the manufacturing process, followed by the delivery of the sails to the 13th edition teams in April 2017.
Currently, practicing crews may use new or used ‘generation 1’ designs for independent training as well as two-boat testing. Race rules will not permit two-boat testing when the new inventory is delivered next April.
“The idea is that all teams will match up for the first time on the start line in Alicante, all with the same amount of knowledge,” said Bice.
What sort of improvements can we expect to see with the next generation sail wardrobe?
“The sails will continue to be reliable, that is a big factor. There will be improved flying shapes based on what has been learned about the boats and a customised wardrobe depending on the race route.”
