Curiously; the J/109 offers to my mind the best balance. In spite of her appearing more racer than cruiser and that niggle about headroom below decks, she seems not only the racer of the group – 16-plus knots proved that – but also the cruiser. Why? She can be sailed in perfect safety when short-handed or with family or friends but still offers sparkling performance on the water. Her rating under IRC is around 1.036 and if she turns out as good a performance on the course as she did for us, there’ll be a few bigger boats running scared. If everything in life is a compromise, this is one I’d prepared to make.
