Magnus Woxén – one of Sweden’s sailing champions’ – has been working on the French Groupama project for the last 18 months. A project considered by many, to have a great chance of winning the next Volvo Ocean Race. Magnus now moves to take on a fresh challenge. To be a vital crewmember in the Maxi11 design, development & launching team.
Magnus has four Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Races beneath his life jacket and the Maxi11 Concept has attracted a lot of attention at the International Yacht Trade Fair in Düsseldorf this January – despite the fact that the Maxi11 didn’t exist at the time.
Is this a winning combo?
– Ha-ha! Sure, Magnus says with a smile and continues:
I take on the job of being the Project Manager at Maxi Yachts focusing on development of the maxi11. The time schedule is a challenge in itself, but this is a perfect time to get on board. I will be highly involved and steer the project forward. Right now we are in the midst of an extremely intense period reaching into this summer.
Gets onboard and joins the Design crew.
The Design Team around Maxi11 has worked on a concept that has come a long way. The next phase is to develop the ideas further. The objective is to use Magnus’ background and experience from different types of yachts, like Whitbread 60 and VO 70, and he will also add value and sound and relevant input regarding characteristics and design details.
”There’s a racer inside everyone’s chest, but one have a family as well.”
Maxi is an icon within the leisure yacht category, but not as a racer. What’s is Magnus view on this?
– I have just started to work. But I see Maxi as a well-known brand with an impressive number of sales, some 16 000 boats delivered. If you look at Maxi as a brand there are a lot of models that was sought after and successful. When Maxi 77 was launched it had a lot of cutting edge thinking, and Pelle Petterson created a lot of great stuff and innovations.
The great thing about design and development is that you can show and establish change rapidly and show what your brand stands for, instead of just talking about it. We will now use the Maxi design and innovation heritage to build and strengthen the brand even more. We will put speed at the helm of this project. Maxi11 will be a racer, quickly adopted in to a comfortable and more family oriented cruiser.
Magnus finish of with a quotation: If there is two yachts at sea, there is also a race.
