E3 har fortfarande kölproblem?

I olika sammanhang har det spekulerats kring Ericssons köl (är den “homogen” eller inte). Nu vill man segla utan att ha alla papper klara.

Dramatik, eller bara formalia?

Många menar ju att Juan K är en kille som tar alldeles för lätt på vad som står i olika regler, och han har ju ritat ett antal båtar som inte fått segla i olika sammanhang.

APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION FOR ERICSSON 3 TO RACE

TO: The Chairman, Volvo Ocean Race Jury
DATE: 23rd September 2008

This Application is made under Notice of Race 5.1(g) as contained in Amendment 9.

The Organising Authority (“OA”) hereby applies for permission for the boat Ericsson 3 (“E3”) to race notwithstanding the fact that the boat will not have a valid VO70 (Version 2) certificate at the start of the In Port Race in Alicante on 4th October 2008. Permission is sought for the Boat to race in the Alicante In Port Race and in such subsequent Legs and In Port Races as the Jury may decide.

Attached is the relevant Report by the Rule Management Group (“RMG ”) dated 23rd September 2008 which reveals that the boat’s keel fin does not comply with Rule 2.14.4(g). The OA supports the proposed compensating arrangement detailed in the RMG Report and accepts that Appendix 5 should remain confidential.

At the time of this Application E3 has not yet completed measurement and the OA has not been informed whether E3 is compliant in all other areas. However we consider it prudent to lodge the Application now in view of the short time remaining before racing.

If the Jury follows its usual custom of seeking comments from other teams this needs to be done in a manner to allow the Teams time to properly consider their submissions and for the Jury to render its decision in a timely manner before the In Port Race on 4th October.

There is also currently considerable conjecture and concern amongst other teams about what the situation is in relation to the E3 keel.

I december är det World Yacht Racing Forum i Monaco. Man skall adressera de kommersiella aspekterna av kappsegling, för båtägare, arrangörer och team, från sponsorskap till media. Programmet ser spännande ut och man har många bra talare med koll på läget.

Jag hoppas att våra kungliga klubbar, SSF och SHF skickar nån för att snappa upp vad som händer ute i världen.

“THE SPORT OF SAILING IS FAR TOO COMPLICATED”

While the America’s Cup community awaits it’s next chapter, we caught up with America’s Cup veteran and Alinghi tactician Brad Butterworth on his views about the current state of the sport of sailing.

Brad, what do you consider as the key issues the sport of sailing faces at the moment?
There are too many conflicts with the race calendar. Many yachtsmen would like to compete more, but they can’t because the regattas take place at the same time.

The sport of sailing is also far too complicated and it just can’t be properly televised and understood. It definitely needs a good shake up in order to become more user-friendly.

Where do you think the complications are specifically?
Well, there are many reasons but to start with, the rules are far too complex. The problem behind this is that sailing’s governing body, ISAF, has a long history of making rules. Every time we want to change something, it ends up in a Committee. The sport is not run by the sportsmen, but by Committees.

What about other issues?
Sailing is not a TV friendly sport and a good example is the last Olympic Games, where it was just impossible to properly follow a regatta.

There are also far too many classes and this is diluting the sport.

Finally, there is a serious problem with the racing calendar. In order to avoid overlaps, there should be an independent governing body. The ISAF could do this, but it is very difficult to find a body of truly independent people.

Do you think junior & Olympic sailing programs prepare young sailors well for a professional career?
There are a lot of very good yacht clubs that help young people to get into the sport. However the problems arise when they reach their late teens and loose the parental support they had until then. They usually go from single handed dinghies such as Optimists or Lasers to double-handed or crewed boats. The transition is not easy and it is hard to keep people into the sport.

What advice would you give to young sailors?
They should not be shy; they should dare to ask the good teams in their clubs for a ride, and they should be available to jump on the opportunities. Because the opportunities are there.

What’s your feeling towards the current Olympic classes?
It is disappointing to see the Olympic classes evolving towards slower boats. The races are boring to watch, whereas they should be fun & exciting and more athletic for the competitors.

The World Yacht Racing Forum will obviously be a good opportunity to debate these issues?
It certainly won’t hurt. Monaco is a great venue, and it is also great that the Yacht Club Monaco is encouraging this initiative. Meeting and talking will certainly be a good start.

Brad Butterworth will be a speaker at the World Yacht Racing Forum in December. He will debate the future of the America’s Cup alongside Bruno Troublé, Sir Keith Mills, Salvatore Sarno, Alessandra Pandarese and Paul Cayard.

Bostik has been on here tour showing everyone what she is capable of. She has been to Northern Europe on the 18th June and has sailed 1,700 nautical miles in very different sailing conditions, with stopovers in the Netherlands, in Germany during the renowned Kiel Week and in Sweden, returning round Denmark.

Then she was off to the USA in July from Cherbourg to the Port of New York City. Alexia Barrier (FRA) was at the helm of Bostik. This will open the course of a transatlantic race specially created for the Veolia Oceans® one-design class that will be raced every year from Summer 2009. She arrived after 15 days 30 minutes across the Atlantic Ocean.

After more than a week dedicated to daily sailing sessions with the American media and skippers as well as with VIP guests, Bostik headed back towards Cherbourg (Normandy – France) on Wednesday 30 July with a crew composed by Charles Caudrelier and Yann Clavier. Arriving home after 11 days 6 hours and 15 minutes, sailing over the 3,501 nautical miles (6,480 km) of the course, at an average speed of 12.95 knots.

Since then she has been in for alterations learnt from all her travels and bring her into the strict one design rule.

On 28 August Bostik started her last promotion and test campaign. On Saturday morning, Yann Clavier set sail towards La Trinité-sur-Mer (Brittany – France) where she will be presented for the first time to the French sailors. He was sailing for a week in the Bay of Quiberon, including a day with onboard Michel Desjoyeaux, the technical consultant of this oceanic one-design series.

5 September at 35 to 40 knots of steady wind (Force 7 to 8), with gusts at 45 knots, that Bostik went out for one more test navigation with Charles Caudrelier at the helm. The bay of Quiberon was completely white with the foam and not a single boat dared to go out today in such hostiles conditions.

“Down wind with the main-sail double-reefed and the jib all the time, Bostik was at 25 knots. We were constantly reaching at twenty knots. The waves sweeping the deck permanently at this speed which is very dangerous and one should take refuge inside and let the auto pilot (NKE) manage the situation. And it does it perfectly actually” declared Charles Caudrelier once back onshore, his face covered with salt. “The new fitting out of the living area is more spacious. Everything is more accessible. It’s good like that. Concerning the boom, we will try it in less extreme conditions”. That’s what is going to take place next Monday under the supervision of North Sails France management who will test the new sail included in the one-design (a Code 0) and who will validate for good the set of sail for the one-design series with Michel Desjoyeaux, technical consultant of the Veolia Oceans® series and Charles Caudrelier. A small to moderate
breeze is forecasted for Bostik on that day.

Bostik will then sail towards La Rochelle to take part to the Grand Pavois. After that, Yann Clavier and Charles Caudrelier will join La Rochelle to Cannes, Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez and Monaco. Then a delivery journey to the south will allow Bostik to take the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race (Malta). It will be the first official confrontation of the Veolia Oceans® one-design with other racing yachts. To conclude this sailing campaign, Bostik will be delivered back to Normandy in October on time to be at the annual rendez-vous of The International Paris Boat Show.

On July 24 boat number two entereded its fit out stage at V1D2 while boat 3 was in the mould.

So the plan remains to have 8 – 10 boats on the starting line for 25 October 2009.
