Race training with British Olympic Coach Jim Saltenstall. Sportsboat “Savage Sailing Team” gybes and rides gale Force 7 and 30+ knot gusts under big spinnaker on The Solent in the UK. Nose diving through rough seas and waves full on sailing to the max flat out on the plane.
No shit!
Tony Bullimore when he he arrived in Auckland after failing in his solo circumnavigation record attempt in 2007. I think at this moment the sun also set on his sailing career.
Gareth Cooke is a former professional sailor with two Volvo Ocean Races to his credit. This background combined with a lifetime of practical boating experience gives him an innate understanding of not only yachting as a sport but also other aquatic related topics. Gareth uses the latest Canon equipment and underwater housings to provide high quality digital images.
How did you start with sailing photography?
I started when I was working as an editor for Sea Spray Magazine in New Zealand about 12 years ago. I gave it away while I was sailing and picked it up again after my second Volvo Ocean Race in 2006.
Which picture are you most satisfied with?
I like a lot of pictures for different reasons so very hard to single one out as a favourite. Any picture that features some sort of new angle or idea that works is a favourite.
Bladerider Moths are so cool. Was a bit nervous because the guy sailing it was new to the class and not in complete control. I needed him to come pretty close as I was using a wide angle.
Best regatta to shoot?
Any regatta. Even the boring ones in grey conditions, you just have to work a bit harder to get the shot.
Worst regatta to shoot?
Ones where you don’t get off the dock because of no wind.
This is Dee Caffari enjoying her new Open 60 during sea trials in Wellington. Not long after this shot I drowned a camera.
Aviva, Wellington Harbour 2008.
Who inspires you?
There are so many great photographers around but if I had to pick a couple it would be Carlo Borlenghi and Oskar Kihlborg. I should also mention Paul Todd, he’s always good fun to shoot with and willing to part with his industry knowledge.
Coming back from a helicopter shoot for Jean-Pierre Dick on his new Paprec Virbac the clouds parted and this shot presented itself totally unexpected.
This was a really fun day shooting 18 foot skiffs from in the water. I had a steel rounding mark for protection.
Taken from the start boat at the 2008 Laser Radial worlds. It was a boat end favour so there was some good action.
What gear do you usually use/favor?
I use Canon 1DS Mk II and for lenses Canon L series 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, and 100-400 f4.5. I use an Ikelite housing for the underwater stuff.
Any advise for those who want to become a better sailing photograph?
Keep looking for different angles, ideas. Have a passion about what you’re shooting.
How do you see sailing photography develop in the future?
More onboard stuff, a-la Volvo Ocean Race this time around. Also technology might bring video and stills closer together.
Given the latest court decision in favor of Alinghi, are you thinking about a multichallenger America’s Cup?
You could think about organizing an America’s Cup next year with multiple challengers but even if you consider there is a very small percentage the court might rule and decide that Cup doesn’t count it is not feasible. We are currently in the same situation we have been for some time now, waiting.
Is there still room for diplomacy in the duel between Alinghi and BMW Oracle?
We have been using diplomacy for a year now. I think we committed an error in July 2007. We should have taken the scheduled 3-week holidays immediately after winning the America’s Cup. The other big error we made was that instead of putting the documents on the table, we should have first presented our vision, the reason of existence of the new Protocol. We made a mistake and didn’t do these two things.
Yet, what we did from July until November was to sit with the Challengers, always inviting BMW Oracle, and made 13 modifications to the Protocol. We also let the Challengers, without our presence, take a decision on the new boat rule. We then agreed on the regatta format. During these 3-4 meetings the Americans always refused to attend and instead decided to go ahead with their litigation to Justice Cahn.
After they won the case with Justice Cahn we once again sat with them and told them, “very well, you won, let’s now work this out and find a solution to go out of the court and on the water for a multihull race”. They refused a solution that would have given us the time to build a boat. We couldn’t accept a regatta where they would have ready a 90ft catamaran while we only had a Version 5 ACC yacht or a 40ft catamaran. This is why we appealed because we had made an offer.
Can we talk about diplomacy when one party doesn’t want to give in, or better said when one party takes a step ahead but the other party always takes a step back? This took place from July until November. In fact they always tried to justify their actions with the idea of fairness but when they are given the opportunity to race on multihulls on an equal foot, they refuse it. I can’t understand this concept!!

New J/97 to Launch in France
The “J/97” is the first J in over two decades under 32’ to combine 6’ headroom and family cruising accommodations in a high performance, easily driven hull. With the handling ease of an asymmetric spinnaker and non-overlapping headsails, the J/97 promises to be J Boats’ most versatile design yet under 35’ to fit the needs of today’s sailing families, both young and old alike.
The key to creating a versatile sailboat is staying focused on the quality of the sailing experience, a trait shared by all J designs. Boats that are easily driven, easily handled, and genuinely fun to sail provide greater long-term “sailing value” to their owners than designs driven by the latest rating rule (remember… rules change) or designs that are over-compromised to meet the latest styling trends. Form usually follows function in good sailboat design, and the J/97 is no exception.
At first glance, the J/97 bears a family resemblance to the J/109 and J/122, two highly successful collaborations between the J Boats design team and J Europe of Les Sables D’Olonne, France. Like its larger siblings, the J/97 is all about delivering a fun and satisfying sailing experience, whether daysailing, single-handing, cruising or racing.
The cockpit features full length seats with back rests, tiller steering, and a unique, partially open transom that incorporates life-raft storage. All the key controls are within reach of the helmsperson. A retractable bow sprit with masthead asymmetric spinnaker allows great all-around performance without the need for numerous skilled crew. The low VCG keel provides exceptional upwind stability while being cruising friendly with a swept back leading edge (to avoid snagging buoys) and moderate draft.
The interior layout is laid out for one or two couple cruising and includes a spacious main cabin with two settees, galley, forward-facing navigation station; plus an enclosed aft head, V-berth, and aft owner’s cabin. Cruising stowage includes a large “garage” aft of the head (accessed through the cockpit seat locker).
J/97 hull #1 is presently in construction in France, and will debut at the Paris Boat Show (Salon Nautique) in early December.
