Sweet… J/100

J/100 Wins Overall Sailing World Award…
Nov. 16, 2004 Sailing World Magazine today named the J/100 as its Overall Boat of the Year for 2005. The J/100 topped a field of 16 nominated entries in Sailing World’s annual salute to boat design innovation (Dec/Jan issue). “It came down to how the boat sailed and how it was put together,” said Boat of the Year Director, Tony Bessinger. “It accelerated well and got in and stayed in a groove,” added Chuck Allen, one of the four independent judges.

There’s nothing quite like steering a sleek, fast boat with a light touch on the tiller, the stability of a keel below, being close to the water and sliding through waves with barely a wake or whisper.
One’s standard of acceleration and that feeling of being one with wind, wave and boat probably started on a small dinghy…a Hobie Cat, Sunfish or inland scow. Then as one’s boats got larger, some of the magic faded. Sure, cruising was an adventure and the camaraderie of a winning race crew unforgettable. But, now it seems there’s less time for such pursuits. Priorities change. Every moment counts. Time’s too precious and the alternatives too numerous to put up with any boat less than what will recapture those simple joys of sailing. J/100 is designed to do just that.
The comforts that experienced sailors appreciate are part of the package. A two cylinder inboard saildrive hums along at 6.5 knots like a sewing machine, when you can hear it. Why limit your horizons because the wind might die? There’s a bona fide marine head and even a couple of bunks with an option for a V-berth forward for the occasional overnight. A dodger works to extend the sailing season.
If you plan to single-hand the boat or do some relaxed non-spinnaker racing, the Hoyt jib boom shown above works great! Using this system, TERN won what one captain called, “the race from hell”…the 2004 Maine Retired (Age 65+) Skipper’s Race. In dense fog, torrential rain, lightning, and 40 degree windshifts, the J/100 excelled. No need to overwork the crew or have anyone on the foredeck when there’s a self-tacking jib and automatic whisker pole. TERN tacked effortlessly on 10 degree shifts, winning the trophy for the fastest of 38 starters. Five minutes back were larger boats with more crew, big winches and huge genoas.
If the joy of sailing is a priority… the feel of acceleration and response of a good boat… we believe you’ll find this ‘J” to be 100% perfect for your day’s sail!

Här har vi några bilder från J/Europe i Olonne sur Mer. De två båtarna i förgrunden har precis kommit från skrovtillverkningen, och den blåa i bakgrunden är precis klar för leverans.

Sail-World: Groupama believed to have capsized off New Zealand

French sailors winched to safety off stricken yacht
All 10 French sailors aboard a capsized round the world racing trimaran 145km east of Dunedin have been rescued safely.
The Wellington-based Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) said the sailors taking part in a round-the-world race were winched to safety by three rescue helicopters this afternoon and ferried to Dunedin.
All aboard the French-built Groupama III single-masted trimaran were uninjured.
The (RCC) has confirmed all aboard the trimaran Groupama III were uninjured when the yacht overturned this afternoon.
Mr Henderson said the 10 crew had all donned survival gear and were on the hull awaiting rescue.
Fixed wing aircraft also assisted in the rescue and an Air Force Orion was on standby to help if required.
It was unknown at this stage what caused the yacht to overturn.
Sea conditions at the time were moderate, with a two metre swell and 30 knot southwesterly winds.
The yacht was taking part in the Jules Verne Round the World Yacht Race when it overturned.
Mr Henderson said the French equivalent of the RCC called the centre at 1.20pm to report it had picked up a signal from the yacht’s emergency position indication beacon (Epirb).

Onboard Guidelines
STRATEGY
ATTACK if weather models and forecasts give a clear and repeatable vision in time and if they are in phase with the global strategy of the concerned area.
If not sure about future weather conditions, adopt a tactic based on opportunity, stay with the other surrounding boats or stay on the classic route.
Do not build a strategic decision based on the other competitors.
In no case, a manoeuvre or the lack of manoeuvre must dictate the strategy.
When not in the lead/leading pack, do not adopt any counter-attack strategy which could increase the risks above the usual limit.
No ‘covering’ strategy if in the lead, unless in the very end of the race.
RYTHME
1st part of race, go full on 100% of the boat/skipper’s potential, and then evaluates the situation when coming into the Indian Ocean.
IN CASE OF DISAGREEMENT
If there’s a situation of disagreement, try to communicate as much as possible to understand the point on which opinions diverge (still respecting the opinion of the other = do not shout), if no compromise can be found: JP decides.
LIFE ONBOARD
Have a debrief everyday in the end of the afternoon, to talk about what’s going well and what’s going wrong, in order to prevent from accumulating…
