Dear Family, Friends & Followers,
For those that haven’t heard, I’m sorry to announce that Django Racing has been abandoned about 300 miles North of Auckland, on her way home from Fiji.
At approx 11:00am NZ Time this morning, in winds averaging more than 50kn and 5m seas, the rudder stock snapped between the two bearings, leaving the rudder swinging underneath the boat, trying to rip itself free. The crew sent out a request for assistance and set the Liferaft up, ready to deploy at a moments notice. The crew kept in touch with Maritime Operations throughout the day, via Satellite phone, and an Airforce Orion was sent out to do a flyover.
Fortunately the Navy Frigate “Otago” was in the region, and reached Django around 6:00pm this evening, when the crew made a hairy but successful transfer onto the Frigate.
We have talked to the crew on the Sat Phone and they’re safe and well, albeit very relieved. I suspect that the reality of the situation may not have set it yet for them.
Ben Costello, the skipper, along with Bex Heilkema and Andrew Cooke, all responded exceptionally well and did everything they could have done. The boat was still floating when they transferred onto the Frigate, and the rudder had not yet sheared off, however large cracks were appearing around the area of the bottom bearings, so we don’t know how long that will last.
The Frigate is heading directly back to Auckland and they should be safely back on land by midday tomorrow. That’s all we know for now, we just wanted to let everyone know the facts as they currently stand.
Lots of love, Andy P
Det viktiga är att besättningen är ok!
What’s Up 1428
Så, vad händer den här veckan i seglingsvärlden?
Eftersnacket efter ÅF Offshore Race fortsätter så klart.
J/70 North Americans med 90 båter, The Newport Regatta & Bacardi Newport Race Week, ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship i Portugal.
Fareast 28R
Fler roliga båtar i lagom storlek. Farr 280, C&C 30 och den här i september. Känns som en tydligt trend. Måste provseglas.
The FAREAST 28R will be launched as a One Design Class in the end of the summer (August), and she will make her first racing appearance at China Cup, 24-27 of October.
The pedigree of the boat will follow the previous R-model from Fareast, the FAREAST 31R.
With a modern hull and sail plan she will be a perfect class boat as well as day cruiser for the demanding sailor.
-“We also see an increasing market for sailing schools, event centers, sailing leagues etc, that are looking for a boat that is easy to handle and maintain, and carries a modern sail plan. So, part of being a One Design Class, we see various areas where the FAREAST 28R will meet our clients request and needs for modern sailing at an affordable price!” says Ellen Jiao Lee, Export Manager at Fareast.”
As all models from Fareast Yachts, the FAREAST 28R comes with a vacuum infused hull in sandwich layer, and with well known deck equipment and rig from Selden, Harken and Spinlock. The rudder and lifting keel is made in Epoxy, and the bulb in lead. The overall weight makes her easy to trailer around at different venues.
ONE DESIGN CLASS – www.FAREAST28R.com
The website will go live on the 1st of September, and will include everything about FAREAST 28R.
In order to be successful in launching a new One Design Class today, is to have a fixed program where sailors easily can choose between local events, as well as International. The social part is becoming an important factor as well, and that’s why Fareast will host at least two (2) own regattas during 2015, but also appear as a own One Design Class at already existing regattas on local markets.
-“We see a trend that One Design Racing can be rather expensive by not limiting the no of sails etc, and that is something we want work on in order to reach anew target groups that don’t have unlimited founding’s. We want to offer One Design Racing in a modern boat affordable to a big group of people.” says Ellen Jiao Lei
