    VENDEE GLOBE: LATEST
    RECORD-BREAKING FIGURES!

The Race Village in Les Sables d’Olonne has been open for three weeks and on the eve of the race start, all the Vendée Globe lights are green.

Record-breaking attendance since the opening of the Village Despite the unexpected closure of the Race Village on November 1st due to extreme weather, the popularity of the Vendée Globe continues to grow in this seventh edition.

When it closes on the evening of November 11, more than a million people will have visited the Race Village, not counting those who will come on the day start.

More than ever, the effort to keep the Village free of charge and accessible to all has been met with success and all skippers have been particularly available for the thousands of sailing enthusiasts who have come to meet them on the pontoon.

The Race Village will be open until 10PM tonight, from 8AM to 8PM tomorrow, and from 10AM to 6PM on the final day, Sunday, November 11th. The pontoons are now closed to the public.

    Very strong media presence
More than 1,000 accredited journalists and media have worked from the Vendée Globe Media Centre, 15% of whom are non-French media, with about thirty countries represented in Les Sables d’Olonne.

As of today, more than 700 French journalists and 300 international ones have been granted access to the official website Press Area.

Since the opening of the Race Village, there have been more than 2,600 pieces of French media coverage, including 250 TV features, 1,100 newspaper and magazine articles, 100 radio segments and 1,100 internet articles. Internationally, 500 internet articles have been written in 9 different countries.

Throughout the race, Vendée Globe action will be broadcast on 65 different TV channels, reaching 2 billion households in 190 countries.

The start will be broadcast live on about 15 TV channels, including 6 international (France 24, BBC, ITV, SkyItalia, nSport in Poland and Léman Bleu in Switzerland). Starting at 9am (French time), SAEM Vendée will be producing a live coverage of the pre-start action for more than two hours.

Starting at 12.30pm (French time) 13 cameras positioned on dry land, in helicopters and at sea – 5 IMOCA yachts will be equipped with one – will provide live coverage of the race start for more than an hour.

    Vendée Globe 2.0
Since October 20, 2.5 million pages have been viewed on vendeeglobe.org, with 25% of the viewers outside of France.

The Vendée Globe has its own DailyMotion channel featuring videos available in three languages. 450,000 DailyMotion videos have been watched, with a total of 600,000 viewed videos when adding the Vendée Globe YouTube channel.

The race’s Facebook page now has 25,000 fans, including 40% of non-French, while the Twitter account is followed by 5,000 enthusiasts.

Virtual Regatta is no exception to this general success, with 100,000 registered players before the start!

As for the official Vendée Globe app, it became the most downloaded free sports app on the App Store (for iPhone and iPad) in only 48 hours!

Also available on Google Play for smartphones and Android tablets, it has already been downloaded more than 25,000 times (all devices included).

      Ouch!

At approximately 17:45 local French time, Marc Guillemot heard a loud bang, likely from a collision. At the time, he was sailing under a main and headsail.

He has decided to head back to Les Sables in order check on how serious the situation is.

The skipper on board Safran has reduced the sail area and is currently sailing at 4 knots and is some 50 miles from the Sables d’Olonne.

Further information will be provied once the boat has been checked upon arrival into the Sables d’Olonne.

Aj!

Damage on Safran, Marc Guillemot forced to retire

At 1745 hrs CET (1645 hrs GMT) on Saturday 10th November, Marc Guillemot called his shore team to inform them that he had hit something and that there had been a loud noise, after which the boat suddenly heeled over. After making the boat safe, the skipper of Safran decided to head back to Les Sables d’Olonne in order to inspect the damage.

Marc Guillemot arrived in the port of Les Sables this morning (Sunday) at 0300hrs local time. His shore team immediately examined the boat and saw that the keel had broken off under the waterline.

As they do not have a spare keel, Safran is unable to set off again in the race.

On Monday morning, 13th November, the monohull will be towed to La Trinité-sur-Mer, where she will be taken out of the water.

Metallurgical tests will be carried out on the keel head in order to determine the causes of the damage.

The Safran group has been alongside Marc Guillemot for 7 years and fully supports him at this difficult time.

A press briefing with Marc Guillemot is due to take place at the esapce Galilée in front of the Vendée Globe media centre in Les Sables d’Olonne at 1100hrs (local time) on Sunday 11th November.

At 1945hrs (French time), on Thursday, November 15th, Samantha Davies contacted the race office of the Vendée Globe to report that her boat had dismasted. Davies is not injured. She is safe inside the boat with all the watertight doors closed. She is monitoring the situation and does not require assistance. She is wearing her survival suit and has safety equipment at hand.
When the incident occurred, she was about 130 nautical miles northwest of Madeira (position 34 ° 20’N 19 ° 01’W). The conditions at the time of dismasting were: wind 260 °, 40 knots, swell northwest, 3 to 4 metres. But the situation will gradually improve, with winds decreasing to 15 knots in the second half of the night.
After speaking to Davies, the race office contacted the Cross Griz Nez (France’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) to release an urgent Notice to Mariners (AVURNAV). All vessels navigating in a 200 nautical mile radius around Savéol were informed of the incident and the position of the boat.

Media briefing at 9.30 am (French Time) at the race headquarters – Paris-Montparnasse.
