    Aksel Magdahl joins Team SCA as coach

    SCA has signed Aksel Magdahl as coach for its all-female team preparing for the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014-2015. The 34 year-old Norwegian will be responsible for coaching navigation strategy, weather routing and performance tactics.

    Magdahl is an experienced offshore sailor who has two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race – Ericsson 3 in 2008-2009 and Sanya in 2011-2012 – to his name. He won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup as well as the ORCi European Championships earlier this year. He is a specialist in navigation strategy, weather routing as well as performance software and analysis.

    Aksel is excited about joining this unique all-female campaign for SCA, a leading global hygiene and forest products company, and says:

    “I’ve raced in two Volvo Ocean Races and it’s the ultimate challenge for a sailing navigator. I’m looking forward to work with Team SCA, and to share my experiences and knowledge. It’s a great opportunity, and I eagerly await becoming a part of the team.”

    Magdahl left the United Kingdom yesterday morning with the rest of the Team SCA crew on board the new VO65, which is being sailed to the team’s training base in the Canary Islands, Spain, where he will be based full time.

    Aksel made a name for himself as a navigator in the 2008-2009 Race when, during his first around-the-world race at the age of 29, he made a bold, unexpected tactical decision that enabled Ericsson 3 to win the longest leg in the history of the Volvo Ocean Race – between the Chinese city of Qingdao and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

    “When I made that tactical move I didn´t think it was such a strange decision as I thought all the others would be choosing the same route. When they didn´t, I got a bit insecure. But it turned out to be a good decision, however!”

    Besides sailing, Magdahl is a keen pilot of various non-commercial airplanes as well as an accomplished cyclist.
