The main event begins on Sunday 29th June , with the first race scheduled for 10.30AM on Monday 30th June, but there has been no shortage of activity since close of challenges for the 9th biennial Rolex Commodores’ Cup 2008.
Organiser, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, has had to deal with last minute changes to the British Blue team following the IRC Nationals, the French making their final team selections at the last possible moment and the usual amendments to ratings. The teams are leaving nothing to chance. Every advantage is a good advantage and no detail is being overlooked.
Fifteen teams, comprising a total of forty-five yachts spread over six nations will be on the start line next week all fired up in anticipation of a highly competitive event. The full National team listings are available on line at www.rorc.org and www.regattanews.com, and here are some highlights:
Class 1
Highest Rating: ESP2000 Bizkaia Maitena Mikel Emaldi (ESP) Corel 45 – Rating: 1.224

Smallest Yacht: IRL3232 Voodoo Chile Eamon Crosbie (IRL White) Ker 32 – 9.75mIf was not for the Dutch Ker 11.3 Daikin Airco in Class 1, Ireland White would have had the smallest boat in each division. Antix Eilie is just 50cm longer.
In the battle of the Designers/Manufacturers, Beneteau, X-Yachts, Mills and Ker come out top with six yachts each, and Archambault have five.
The fifteen challenges lodged for the 2008 event matches the previous highest achieved in 1996, when the England Green team won the event. The lowest number of teams was seven in 2000.
The USA has won the event twice (1992 & 94), GBR once (2004), France twice (2002 & 2006), Germany once (1998), the Channel Islands once (2000), England once (1998).
The Netherlands has entered at least one team in every event except 2000. Hong Kong last competed in 1992. Spain has competed twice before in 1998 and 2002.

A total of 9 Corby designed yachts turned up for the inaugural Corby Cup regatta consisting of 6 races held over 3 days, Friday to Sunday 20th to 22nd June, run from the Royal London Yacht Club in Cowes.
Because of the wide range in size, from the 45ft Incisor down to the 25ft Drakes Drum the fleet was divided for extra prizes in addition to the overall winner.
The racing format was also wide ranging starting with 2 short Solent races from the Club line on Friday afternoon, followed by 3 windward leeward races from a committee boat start on Saturday with a final longer Solent race planned for Sunday morning, which in the event was cancelled due to strong wind, a popular decision with every crew bearing in mind the party the previous night.
Roy Dickson’s 36 Rosie proved to be a clear overall winner but seldom by much more than a minute, followed by David & Jackie Riley’s 33 No Retreat, who’s crew seemed to have found the go button and began the regatta with a textbook start. 3rd and 4th overall was a close match between Stephen Brackley’s 30 Wild Child which counted a 2nd and 3rd and had all the bigger boats checking their watches, and the Octon’s 35 Njos, the oldest boat in the regatta but sporting a recent new keel and mast and flying both upwind and down.
Other special mentions include a trawling award to Cracklin’ Rosie; Drakes Drum who never missed the chance to keep in the frame with flawless hoists and drops; and Catherine which brought some old fashioned elegance to the event. Shoreside, Friday evening was the more formal with a drinks party in the Sir Max Aitken museum followed by a dinner in the Royal London Yacht Club. Then a bar-b-q for 150 at Corby’s on Saturday with catering by Quay Cuisine gave crews an opportunity to mingle, with a special mention to Njos who arrived fully equipped to make, what looked like, a small bath of Pimms. Other supporters on Saturday evening were Coca Cola and Wight Vodka.
A Sunday lunchtime prizegiving at the RLYC completed the regatta with a large selection of goodies being presented, for which Harken, North, Marineware and Coutts are to be thanked. The main prize, of course, being a new perpetual trophy constructed in house by Corby Yachts, utilising carbon fibre, stainless steel and teak as a cross section of the materials used in boatbuilding, with a surprise added bonus of the latest model Corby electric trouserpress, customised with the Corby Yachts logo, kindly donated by John
Corby Ltd.
Segling – den gröna sporten
Kanske skall de svenska seglarna som skall med till Kina komplettera sin utrustning? Verkar svårseglat… stiltje, ström, dimma, sjögräs och stulna väderbojar. Storyn från Sail World:
240 boats try and remove sea-weed from the Qingdao Olympic course area
Australia’s 470 Coach, Victor Kovalenko shared these photos and insight from the current training camp in China.
‘As you can see we have one more problem in Qingdao apart of light wind and strong current, it is seaweed. The local government has employed 240 fishing boats to clean Qingdao bay and they are working really hard but… Sailing is almost impossible now!’
Other days the fog has been so thick that a GPS has been needed to find the way back to shore.
470 stars Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page probably didn’t think they would be sailing in conditions like these when they named their boat ‘Dead Calm!’

J/99 | rumour
Senaste skvallret från SA. Låter som en sweet båt!
J/oining the Fray
It looks like J/boats is joining the 10 meter sports yacht battle with the soon-to-be released J/99. A sort-of mini J/109 with some of the features from the 122, we’re told the 99 will have a moderate-weight hull capable of planing, an aluminium spar bigger than the 105, masthead spinnakers, outboard chainplates, and a target price well below the 109. It seems that Pearson Composites and J/Boats have had a falling out, and, like the J/109, the 99 will be produced in Europe only, with the first US boats coming over sometime around April. If there’s enough interest, J/Boats will start production in the US – but not at Pearson, and not with SCRIMP.
While we give J/Boats plenty of crap for their insistency on creating models at nearly every conceivable size, the 10 meter size has proven to be marketable for handicap and club OD racing. It’s hard to imagine the J/99 succeeding in any great numbers with the success of the FT-10, but there are plenty of J customers out there that love the company, and are happy to continue paying premium prices for moderate performers.
