at Farr 30 Worlds, Swedes To Defend Nation’s PrideBåstad, SWEDEN (31 July 2012) – It can be tough enough to get enough sleep during the bright summer months on the West Coast of Sweden, but that may be the least of the sailors’ concerns as the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship gets ready to kick off on Thursday.
Fatigue will likely play a big role here; aside from the long-lasting sunshine and a schedule that will see three tough races each day, the resort town of Bastad, Sweden, better known for hosting the wildly successful Swedish Open tennis tournament for nearly 65 years, stays up late and parties hard. The sailors may find sleep hard to come by during the most competitive Worlds in years.
“This is the best Worlds fleet we’ve seen since at least 2008, both in size and talent,” said International Class President Deneen Demourkas. She should know; the Groovederci skipper won the 2011 title on the final race of the San Francisco Worlds last September. “Since a complete reorganization of the Class in 2009, we’ve seen consistently strong growth all over the world, and I’m incredibly proud to see such a big, strong fleet here in Sweden.”
